When We Two Parted
Paddy's Notes
This is an adaptation of a beautiful poem written by Lord Byron. It is about Frances Webster and tells the story of a couple that shared a secret relationship and were forced to separate for a period of time. During this period Frances Webster committed an act of indiscretion and Lord Byron was shamed and betrayed. The decline of the relationship is beautifully reflected in the wonderful words of Lord Byron.
Although the publication date for this poem is 1813, Byron actually wrote it in 1808. This was to keep the identity of the person a secret.
Lyrics
When we two parted
In silence and tears
Half broken hearted
To sever for years
Pale grew your cheek
And cold grew your kiss
Surely that hour foretold
Sorrow to this
The dew of the morning
Put a chill on my brow
It felt like the warning
Of what I'm feeling now
Your vows are all broken
And the light is your fame
When I hear your name spoken
I share in the shame
They name you before me
It's like a call to my ear
This feeling comes over me
Why were you so dear?
They don't know I knew you
But I knew you too well
And long shall I love you
Too deeply to tell
In secret we met
In silence I grieve
That your heart could forget
That your spirit deceives
If I should meet you
After long years
How should I greet you?
In silence and tears
How should I greet you?
In silence and tears
